ABOUT IBN > Executive Director's Message

I am pleased to report that IBN has continued to perform well in FY2010. Between April 2010 and March 2011, IBN scientists have published 83 papers in archival journals, with 41 publications in journals with impact factors greater than 5, and 21 publications in journals with impact factors greater than 7. In addition, our scientists were invited to give keynote lectures or seminars at 75 scientific conferences and events. IBN was granted 16 primary patents, and our researchers filed a total of 17 primary patent applications and 139 secondary patent applications. IBN has 105 active collaborations with A*STAR research institutes, companies, academic institutions and clinicians.

At IBN, our priority is to think strategically to pursue research that would lead to significant and lasting impacts on society. We distinguish ourselves by creating innovative platforms at the interface of science, engineering and medicine. Our researchers aim to not only publish well, but also to have commercial impact with our new technologies. Over the past 7 years, IBN scientists have filed 239 primary and 822 secondary patent applications. Our research has received substantial interest from the biomedical and pharmaceuticals sectors, as well as the medical technology and advanced materials sectors.

IBN's unique research directions have also attracted global talents in the emerging fields of bioengineering and nanotechnologies to pursue interdisciplinary research at Biopolis. The strong team work between scientists, engineers and medical doctors allows us to successfully tackle complex problems and challenges. Our efforts have not only led to new knowledge published in top journals, but also strong portfolios of intellectual properties. IBN has received international recognition for its research, and was the recipient of A*STAR's Outstanding Publication Award and Patent Power Award in both 2009 and 2010, since the inception of these awards in 2009.

IBN's scientists have created unique enabling platform technologies, such as biomaterials, microfluidic systems, synthetic biologics, and catalysts. These "tool boxes" allow us to flexibly develop solutions towards challenges in the medical technology, consumer businesses, pharmaceuticals chemicals, energy, and clean technology sectors.

Our vision for the next 5 years is to work closely with industrial, clinical and research partners to create more technological breakthrough that would benefit our society. We shall achieve this goal by building on our platform technologies for a more diversified portfolio of applications.
